Dear adoptive parents and professionals

The number of internationally adopted children has been growing very quickly since 1990. Post-institutionalized children differ significantly from other English language learners and often require remediation. This work becomes especially costly and frustrating to both parents and school personnel if the opportunity for early intervention is lost due to lack of understanding and experience with school placement and support for these children. Such missed opportunities, though, come as no surprise, because virtually no training has been provided to school professionals on the specifics of this population.

Professional development courses are designed for adoption agency professionals and school personnel: school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, speech therapists, occupational therapists, ESL teachers, school administrators, and special education teachers/remedial specialists who work with internationally adopted children.
